Another success story of Punjab; Law and Order situation registers incessant improvement since 2007

As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, the crime rate of Punjab has been falling since 2007 as compared to the National Crime Rate. In 2007 crime rate of Punjab was 135 against the national crime rate of 172 and in 2014 state had registered 129 crime rate against nation crime rate of 220.

cropped-law-and-order-special-victims-unit2Commenting on this success rate, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal who also holds portfolio of Home Minister of the state says, “Punjab government has always accorded top priority to preserve peace, communal harmony and brotherhood in the state and its every decision is aimed at promoting these values. Our government accorded the highest priority to peace and the maintenance of law and order in the state. The law enforcing agencies are keeping a round the clock vigil against any attempts to create disturbance in the state. Punjab police is fully geared up to deal with cases of routine crime. The State police has also have been directed to keep a special eye on those who were out to make political capital by inflaming passions on religious or casteist issues”.

It is pertinent to mention here that Punjab has been incessantly improving its rank for having lowest crime rate in the country. Punjab has registered steady improvement in maintaining law and order situation as state was ranked 11 in 2007, remained 10th in 2008 & 2009, 9th in 2010, 8th in 2011, 6th in 2012 & 2013 and 4th in 2014.

State has also maintained downward trend in crime rate during 2015 and registered 701 murder, 886 rape and 26 dacoit cases against 767, 981 and 32 cases registered respectively during 2014.

On the front of state’s war against drugs, in 2007 there were 6111 cases registered whereas 10159 cases were registered in 2015 and during last four years special campaign against drugs has shown very good results.  In 2015, 12181 persons were arrested which includes almost all major drug peddlers.

Police department has made huge recovery of drugs and narcotics during year 2015 and Punjab Police with the help of BSF made huge efforts and seized heroin to the tune of 429 Kgs. The infiltration of other drugs like opium and poppy husk from the neighboring states also was kept under check and hence, their recoveries decreased.

Due to effective prosecution of cases under NDPS act, the conviction rate went up in these cases. In the year 2008 it was 68 percent which has gone high to 81 percent in year 2015.

Strict action has been taken against gangsters involved in contract killing, protection money, taking money for possession of land and other organized gangs. As on March 31, 2016 Punjab Police has arrested 423 accused members of 57 gangs out of which 310 were either in jails or on bail. Punjab has created special task force to nab and put behind the bars all the remaining gangsters.
